The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Wow!!!! This sounds like someone I know very well.”The unexamined life is not worth living.”- Socrates

I really like that quote but I have never seen it before. A very “exciting” discovery ;).

I believe it means that life, without understanding its true meaning, is not a life that allows for a human to reach their true capabilities. Combining the two quotes I would say that understanding life will help you shed the unimportant and focus on the true meaningful and fleeting moments/gifts that we experience on a day to day basis.
